DNSChanger is a type of malware that affects macOS and Windows computers. A new variant of DNSChanger which only affects macOS computers has been identified. This new variant known as OSX/DNSChanger.a OR OSX/MaMi .
What does this malware do?
OSX/DNSChanger.a and OSX/MaMi change the DNS settings on your computer, which allows an attacker to intercept and redirect your computer’s Internet traffic via their malicious servers. When your information, including passwords and other private data, passes through these servers, it can be seen and harvested by the attacker.
What should I do to avoid getting infected?
- Ensure that your security software is up to date
- Think before you click
If you receive an email that contains an attachment, think twice before clicking it. Malware such as this typically spreads through malicious emails or fake security alerts and pop-ups.- If a pop-up looks strange, don’t click it.
- If you were not expecting an email that looks suspicious, delete it, even if it appears to come from someone you know. You can always ask them to send it again if it is legitimate.
